Thirty-six views of Mt.Fuji from Katsushika Hokusai’s ukiyo-e prints.I will explain Senju Musashi.
Senju, at its current address, is on the border of Senjusakuragi 1-chome and 2-chome, Adachi-ku, near the entrance intersection of Teikyo University of Science.
It used to be the starting point of the Oshu Kaido, and was a strategic point of transportation leading to the Mito Kaido and the Nikko Kaido. It was famous as one of Edo four post towns.
Here, the scenery of the post town is not drawn, but rather the area near the Arakawa water gate in the upstream of the Sumida River.
Fuji seen through the pillars of the sluice gate is depicted, and it seems as if the viewer is enjoying the contrast between the straight lines of the pillars of the sluice gate and the shape of Mt. Fuji.
It is also interesting that the shape of the horse’s back in front of the water gate resembles Mt.Fuji.
The carriage attached to the back of the horse is called a datsuke mokko or sukari, and is used for dredging the fields on the Omiya plateau.
It is used for transporting things that can be packed in any form, such as soil and compost.
Carriage is like grass, not vegetables. Since this area is near Edo, manure is used a lot, and there is almost no custom of cutting grass to make compost.
It is believed to be grass cut for horse fodder.
If you look closely, you can see that the reins of the horse are also tied to the straw sandals, forming a symmetrical shape with Mt.Fuji.
There are two fishermen hanging their fishing lines in the moat, creating a relaxing atmosphere.
This version has a very beautiful brown color.
