甲州三嶌越 Mishima Pass in Kai Province

Hokusai,Katsuhika

Katsushika Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e I will explain Mishima Pass in Kai Province in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

Mishima-goe in this ukiyo-e is the route from the Kofu Basin through the foot of Mt.
It is located on the border of Yamanashi and Shizuoka prefectures.

The composition of this ukiyo-e is the appearance of Mt.

A huge tree pierces through the center of the picture, and Mt. Fuji rises in the background.

The east side of Mt. Fuji is a place where a large amount of volcanic ash etc. was deposited due to the Hoei eruption. Therefore, it is difficult to think that there is a huge tree.
It is believed that the giant tree hid the Hoei crater.

Three travelers holding hands and trying to measure the size of a huge tree is really interesting during the trip.

Hokusai also draws “Yatate Cedar” in his ukiyo-e “Hokusai Manga”. Utagawa Hiroshige draws a picture of a person spreading his hands alone in the ukiyo-e “One Hundred Famous Views of Various Countries” “Koshu Yatate Cedar”.

The shape of the clouds floating around Mt. Fuji is a charming shape.

This ukiyo-e is from around 1830 to 1832. Hokusai is around 72 years old.
