Katsushika Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e I will explain Mt. Fuji Reflected in Lake Kawaguchi in Kai Province in Edo in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
Misaka in this ukiyo-e is currently called Misaka located in Fuefuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture. Lake Kawaguchi and Mt. Fuji seen from Misaka Pass are very beautiful.
In the center, a summer image of Mt.Fuji with the reddish surface of the mountain exposed is depicted.
The view of Mt. Fuji from here is also known as “Upside-down Fuji” because it is reflected on the surface of Lake Kawaguchi and looks upside down.
The feature of this ukiyo-e is that the figure of Mt.Fuji is reflected on the surface of the lake where there are no waves.
However, what is reflected on the surface of the lake is the snow-capped Mt. Fuji in winter. I dared to express Mt.Fuji in winter because it is impossible to see it in reality.
Also, the position of Mt. Fuji and the position of the shadow reflected on the water surface are out of alignment.
The floating island in the center is thought to be Unoshima.
Misaka Pass is a pass that straddles Fujikawaguchiko Town, Minamitsuru County, Yamanashi Prefecture and Misaka Town, Fuefuki City, Yamanashi Prefecture.
It is on the route of Kamakura Okan Misakaji. The name Misaka comes from the fact that Yamato Takeru no Mikoto crossed during his expedition to the eastern part of Japan.
This ukiyo-e is from around 1830 to 1832. Hokusai is around 72 years old.
