隅田川関屋の里 Sekiya Village on the Sumida River.

Hokusai,Katsuhika

Katsushika Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e I will explain Sekiya Village on the Sumida River in Edo in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

This ukiyo-e Sekiya no Sato is located near present-day Senju, Adachi Ward, where Sekiya Station on the Keisei Line is located.
The area facing the Sumida River.
It refers to the area of one circle from Sumida to Senjugawara.

The Sumida River is not depicted in this ukiyo-e.

It got its name because a checkpoint was established in the Kamakura period.

It is early in the morning when the morning mist is rising, and in the distance you can see Red Mt. Fuji illuminated by the morning sun.

In this ukiyo-e, three samurai in traveling clothes galloping on horseback along the Ushida embankment on a bank that stretches out to the fields, expresses the realism of the early horse.
The dynamic use of color and the detailed expression of the horse are wonderful.
The hat hides the expression of the horse’s face, but all eyes are directed forward.

At the far right is the bulletin board where laws and regulations are posted.

The pine tree that stretches in the center clearly has its branches conscious of the shape of Mt. Fuji.

This ukiyo-e is from around 1830 to 1832. Hokusai is around 72 years old.
