従千住花街眺望ノ不二 Mt. Fuji from Pleasure Quarter at Senju

Hokusai,Katsuhika

Katsushika Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e I will explain Mt. Fuji from Pleasure Quarter at Senju in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

This ukiyo-e Senju is the first post town on the Nikko Highway.
This is a composition of a view of Shin-Yoshiwara, a red-light district, from the mountain valley located south of the post station.

In the foreground, a procession of feudal lords carrying guns and spears is depicted on their way to the province.
The red armor cases that each person holds are clearly arranged neatly.

It is thought that the procession of the armor case and hair spear was the procession of the Nanbu clan heading for the province.

The gun bearers looked around to the left and right, and did not appear to be in a great hurry.

On the other side of the procession, two peasant women who have finished harvesting rice are sitting on the footpath of the rice field and watching the procession with curiosity.

The row of houses in the middle of this ukiyo-e is the entertainment district of Senju.

Sanya is the common name for the Kiyokawa, Nihontsutsumi, and Higashi Asakusa areas in the northeastern part of Taito Ward, Tokyo.
Because there were many cheap lodgings, workers gathered here, and it was used as the former name of the Yoseba and the surrounding Doya-gai.
It was sometimes referred to as the Yoshiwara Yukaku because it was once a brothel.

This ukiyo-e is from around 1830 to 1832. Hokusai is around 72 years old.
