Katsushika Hokusai’s Ukiyo-e I will explain Umezawa Hamlet-fields in Sagami Province in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.
Umezawa in this ukiyo-e is located in present-day Ninomiya-no-sho, Naka-gun, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is a place where you can see Mt.Fuji on the banks of the Oshikiri River.
It says Umezawa left'', but
Umezawa sho” or “Umezawa in” seems to be correct.
Umezawa was bustling as a resting place between Oiso-juku and Odawara-juku.
It is deep in the mountains, and the towering Mt.Fuji is covered with haze.
The composition of this ukiyo-e, with the clouds on the left and right, and the four red-crowned cranes nestled on the water’s edge, is superbly rendered with their feathers.

This ukiyo-e is a work of indigo printing based on the popular pigment of the time.
Umezawa Beach is famous in present-day Ninomiya Town. The Umezawa coast is easy for people to gather because it is possible to come directly to the beach by car.

This ukiyo-e is from around 1830 to 1832. Hokusai is around 72 years old.
