御厩河岸より両国橋夕陽見 Sunset across Ryogoku Bridge from the Bank of Sumida River at Onmayagashi.

Hokusai,Katsuhika

Katsushika Hokusai’s ukiyo-e The explanation Sunset across Ryogoku Bridge from the Bank of Sumida River at Onmayagashi in Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji.

The Onmaya Riverbank, called Fujimi no Watashi in this ukiyo-e, is located between Ryogoku Bridge and Azuma Bridge on the Sumida River, near where the present-day Umaya Bridge crosses.
It is called Mimaya Riverbank because the shogun’s stables were located here.

Beyond the bridge is the scenery of Yanagibashi, the opposite bank of Ryogoku.
From the position of Mt.Fuji, it is captured from the north side of the stable bridge, and depicts the moment when the ferry leaves the opposite shore in the direction of Asakusa.
The ship is overflowing with passengers rushing home, some crouching from the fatigue of the day, and some with towels on the surface of the water.

From the line of sight of the boatman rowing the boat, you can see the beautiful silhouette of Mt. Fuji floating in the setting sun.
It says “Yuhimi”, so after the colorful sunset, people are immersed in a blue monochrome world.
The expression of the evening is clearly seen in the foreground and blurred in the background, so that the evening can be clearly seen.

This ukiyo-e is from around 1830 to 1832. Hokusai is around 72 years old.
